Commonly used as sun protection at terraces, balconies or conservatories, awings are available in many patterns and colours. A canvas blind

… is an appliance which is used to cover either faces or mouths by using rollable, pleatable or fixed hangings. For Canvas blinds only dirt repelling and water resistant materials will be processed.

Canvas blinds can be controlled in several ways. To vary from a manual crank handle to a modern electronically controlled motor, everything is possible. While using a modern motor system you can easily control the sunlight protection, light exposure, air circulation and the darkening of your preferred places from everywhere in your home.

Awnings in the beer garden

To protect your guests from heavy sunlight it is a good idea to buy an awning. So you can extend the “open air season” while offering your customers a protected outside guest room. But nowadays this is not possible without good protective devices.

When the temperature is raising in summer, the open air season starts in the beer gardens. During daytime awnings dispense pleasant shadows. Afterwards the sun protection systems turn mild evenings into wonderful summer nights.

Usually an awning has a width of seven to eight meters. But sometimes multiple awnings are connected to a huge one.

Some awnings are not designed for rain protection. During heavy rain and wind they have to be retracted. Otherwise they can become subject of damage.

For awnings with the capability of being a rain shield you have to take care that the rain can run down from the fabric to the bottom, so that there is no possibility to have huge amounts of water stressing the fabric and the frame.

Canvas blinds and awnings are distinguished into:

  • retractable awnings
  • lateral arm awnings
  • side arm awnings
  • drop arm awnings
  • portabe / pop-up canopies
  • solar shade screens

The simplest construction of a canvas blind is the basket awning. A framework made of aluminium arcuated to a quarter circle, which can be fixed or retractable and covered with a canvas blind. With this type you can achieve different angular shapes. Commonly it is used in stores and cafes. Thanks to its arcuated form it is very resilient and can easily absorb gusts of wind and other possible damages. With an appropriate cover it can also be used as rain shield.

Conservatories are shaded by conservatory awnings

The drop arm awning, a roll canvas blind construction, is used for shading and view repelling on windows, but still leaving some light through according to be only a glare shield. The drapery is fixed on a drapery roll… The required driving power is raised by special pressure springs. A drop awning is similar to a drop arm awning. The only difference between them is that the fabric moves down uprightly (vertically)… The weight of the front bar determines the drapery being pulled down.

A combination of drop- and drop arm awning is the drop arm awning. First the drapery moves down uprightly and then rises by the arms as a drop arm awning. This construction is commonly used in schools, hospitals and similar public buildings. The lateral arm awning uses a different system: The drapery is pushed away from the roll by two or more arms. Therefore the canvas blind can be raised almost horizontally. By using steel or gas pressure springs the arms are set under tension pushing the drapery apart and keep it tense.

It is distinguished between opened lateral arm awnings where the drapery roll is visible, and closes or cassette lateral arm awnings where the drapery roll is protected in a box.
